FLORENCE, ITALY – In Italy 36 million doses of the vaccine have been administered and “at this rate we will exceed 70 million between June and July, many of which with single doses”. This was stated by Undersecretary for Health Andrea Costa, adding: “This June will be a turning point. Keeping this trend by the end of July, it will be possible to remove the masks outdoors“.
Now it is possible for all people aged 16 and over in Italy to book COVID-19 vaccinations, without having to respect age-range criteria. Up to now, Italy’s vaccination campaign had operated on the basis of a person’s age, with older people and people considered vulnerable because of their medical conditions given priority.
Each region can adjust the calendar according to its availability, in Tuscany vaccinations for all people over 16 will start on Monday 7 June 2021.
Italy is also set to start vaccinating 12-16-year-olds after the European Medicines Agency (EMA) authorised the Pfizer jab for younger adolescents. But the regions will decide how to manage the vaccines for these minors.
