Florence’s All’Antico Vinaio Opens Its First Store in Australia

One of Florence’s best-known food businesses has opened its first store in Australia, bringing its signature schiacciatasandwiches to Sydney as part of its continuing international expansion.

The new venue has been launched through a partnership between All’Antico Vinaio, Australian chef and MasterChef Australia judge Andy Allen, and Fladgate Hospitality Group. The collaboration marks the company’s entry into the Australian market, where it hopes to build on the success it has achieved in Europe, the United States and the Middle East.

Founded in Florence in 1991 as a small family-run sandwich shop in Via dei Neri, just a short walk from Palazzo Vecchio, All’Antico Vinaio has become one of the city’s most recognisable food brands. Long queues outside its original shop have made it a familiar sight for both residents and visitors, while social media exposure has helped turn the business into an international name.

According to the company, many of the ingredients used in the Sydney store—including flour and mozzarella—are imported directly from Italy. The schiacciata, a traditional Tuscan flatbread, is baked fresh on site every day, while spreads such as pesto and other fillings are prepared in-house. The menu also includes an Australia-exclusive sandwich called the Sydney.

With the Australian opening, All’Antico Vinaio now operates more than 60 locations worldwide. Sydney is the latest step in the Florence-based company’s overseas expansion, which has seen it establish a presence in major cities across Europe, North America and the Middle East while continuing to operate its historic shops in the Tuscan capital.
