Florence riders strike over pay and heat as protest planned in city centre

Workers are calling for higher pay, greater protections during extreme heat and changes to their employment conditions.

The Italian Health Ministry has placed Florence under its highest heat warning level for three consecutive days, with temperatures.

The Italian Health Ministry has extended Florence’s highest-level heat warning through Saturday June, 27.

Ticket sales were suspended for the rest of the day on Tuesday June 24, 2026 as extreme temperatures put pressure on the museum’s cooling system.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to take precautions as temperatures remain exceptionally high.

The free public spaces offer drinking water, shelter and cooler environments for residents and visitors during the hottest days of summer.

Two separate incidents involving public transport vehicles were reported in the Florence area. No injuries were reported.

Temperatures are forecast to go well above seasonal averages through the weekend.

The warning level is expected to increase to orange on Tuesday 26 May ands Wednesday 27 May 2026.

Forecasts for Florence indicate temperatures could reach 34-35°C (93-95°F) between Tuesday 26 May and Wednesday 27 May 2026,
