Tickets possible for Venice

Contesting the tourist tax suggested by Venice

FLORENCE, ITALY – Venice Tourism Chief Paola Mar said that the city is considering making visitors pay a ticket to book entry into Saint Mark’s Square. This new tourist tax does not like other Italian cities, as Florence, Rome and the national Culture minister Dario Franceschini.

“It is a possibility that exists, not immediately, and within the realm of an agreed-on path – Mar told – Saint Mark’s is a monumental area. We have evaluated the limited closure of the area, with an eventual ticket, and seen that it is possible from the technical and legal point of view”.

In particular, the city of Florence is working to expand tourism all over the seasons and widen the area where visitors enter, but disagrees with a tax only for tourists.

  1. “This new tourist tax does not like other Italian cities.” What does that mean? Is that some new way to write English? And, yes, while the city of Florence is trying to “expand” to cover all seasons, you can be sure the residents aren’t happy about it.

  2. Ah, yes. Florence is just another city in Italy that does more for the tourists than for the residents. Most apartments are unavailable to residents and are only rented to tourists and students at a very high cost. Residents call Florence “Disney Land,” and for good reason. It is overrun by tourists and foreign students. As the years go by, more residents are pushed out, more Italian businesses close and are being replaced by businesses that serve foreigners, and the streets become impassible because of the millions upon millions of tourists who clog them. Florence isn’t an “Italian” city anymore, so while one can find art, if one is looking for culture here, one won’t find it.
