Rail traffic through the Ponte al Pino area will be suspended from 11 p.m. on Sunday, 26 July, until 11 a.m. on Thursday, 30 July, allowing RFI, the Italian railway infrastructure manager, to lift and install the new bridge deck over the railway line.
The operation follows the removal of the old bridge earlier this month. A large crane positioned in Piazza Vasari will lift the new structure, assembled on site in recent months, into place before being dismantled once the installation is complete.
During parts of the operation, the pedestrian footbridge across the railway will also be closed, depending on construction requirements.
Road closures around the construction site
From 28 July to 14 August, additional road closures will be introduced while the crane is dismantled.
Via degli Artisti will be closed between Piazza Vasari and Via Masaccio, while Via Luca Giordano will be closed between Via Fra’ Buonvicini and Via degli Artisti. Part of Via Fra’ Buonvicini will temporarily change direction to maintain local access.
Emergency vehicles, police and authorised residents accessing private driveways will be exempt from the restrictions.
Train services diverted
The rail disruption follows the same arrangements adopted during the previous closure on 5 July.
Long-distance and regional trains will terminate either at Florence Campo di Marte or Florence Santa Maria Novella, depending on their route.
Passengers travelling on Italy’s high-speed rail network will be transferred between Campo di Marte and the Santa Maria Novella area by dedicated shuttle buses escorted by Florence’s municipal police to reduce delays and protect rail connections.
Around Campo di Marte station, temporary traffic restrictions, parking bans and one-way systems will be introduced from 9 p.m. on Sunday, 26 July, until 11 a.m. on Thursday, 30 July, with municipal police deployed to manage traffic.
Free shuttle and tram travel for rail passengers
The City of Florence will once again provide a free shuttle bus linking Campo di Marte station with the city centre.
The shuttle will operate between 6 a.m. and midnight on 27, 28 and 29 July, and from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 30 July.
Passengers holding either high-speed or regional rail tickets will also be able to travel free of charge on parts of Florence’s tram network during the disruption.
The shuttle will connect Campo di Marte with Piazza della Libertà, where passengers can transfer to Tram Line T2, and Viale Strozzi, providing access to Tram Line T1 for Santa Maria Novella station or Careggi.
Changes to buses and taxis
Several urban and suburban bus routes will be diverted while the rail closure is in effect.
The temporary bus terminal normally located at Piazzale Montelungo will move to Via Santa Caterina da Siena, close to Santa Maria Novella station, to make space for replacement rail services.
Bus stops around Campo di Marte station will also be reorganised, affecting several city and regional routes.
Taxi ranks outside Campo di Marte station will be temporarily relocated to Via Mannelli to accommodate the replacement buses.
The city said around 50 municipal police officers will be deployed each day to manage traffic, public transport and passenger movements throughout the four-day operation.
