From concerts to open-air cinema, Estate Fiorentina 2026 takes over Florence

Florence has unveiled the programme for Estate Fiorentina 2026, the city’s annual summer cultural season, with more than 1,200 events scheduled between 1 June and 30 September across parks, squares, cloisters and public spaces throughout the city. The programme includes concerts, cinema screenings, theatre, dance performances, literary events and multidisciplinary festivals organised by more than 160 associations and cultural groups.

The 2026 edition, presented under the title “Giorni d’Estate”, will feature 1,268 events organised through 115 projects, six thematic events and nine major festivals, alongside programming in 11 outdoor summer venues spread across Florence. City officials said the initiative is intended to strengthen access to culture beyond the historic centre, with particular attention to neighbourhoods and public spaces such as the Cascine park.

The programme was presented at Palazzo Vecchio by Florence mayor Sara Funaro and culture councillor Giovanni Bettarini. According to the municipality, the city has allocated nearly €1.9 million to the initiative, including €800,000 from the PN Metro Plus 2021–2027 European urban development fund and the remainder from municipal resources.

The visual identity for this year’s programme was created in collaboration with students from IED Florence, the private design school, through a contest involving illustration, visual communication and graphic design students.

A city-wide cultural programme

Estate Fiorentina has become one of Florence’s largest annual public cultural programmes, combining long-running festivals with new events and free outdoor activities during the summer months.

The 11 venues hosting summer programming this year include Giardino dell’Orticoltura, Le Murate Caffè Letterario, Anconella Garden, Piazza Tasso, the Ultravox space at Parco della Tinaia in the Cascine area, Giardino delle Rose and the former campsite at Piazzale Michelangelo.

Municipal officials described the initiative as an effort to encourage residents to use public spaces across the city during the summer period, while also decentralising cultural activities away from the most tourist-heavy areas.

Among the artists, actors, musicians and writers expected to appear during the season are Stefano Bollani, Brunori Sas, Pif, Tosca, Frankie HI-NRG, Vasco Brondi, Alborosie, Fabrizio Bosso, DJ Gruff and actress Anna Foglietta, alongside international performers and dance companies.

New thematic events for 2026

One of the main new projects this year is “Crossover 80”, a programme dedicated to Florence’s New Wave and alternative cultural scene of the 1980s. Running from 2 July to 18 September, the initiative will include exhibitions, screenings and events connected to the city’s music and artistic scene of that decade.

The opening exhibition, “Florence Calling”, will be held at MAD Murate Art District and will explore Florence’s underground cultural atmosphere during the 1980s, including independent radio stations, experimental theatre and bands such as Litfiba. Events connected to the programme are also scheduled at Le Murate, Piazza Pitti, Contempo Records and Crisco Club.

Another new project is “Costruiamo la Pace” (“Building Peace”), scheduled for 11 and 12 July. Organised by the Beatmi association with artistic direction by Israeli singer Noa and musician Gil Dor, the programme will combine concerts and discussions focused on dialogue and coexistence. Events are planned at the Cascine amphitheatre and Teatro Niccolini.

Several established initiatives are also returning. “La Gaberiana”, dedicated to Italian singer-songwriter and playwright Giorgio Gaber, will take place from 20 to 23 July in Florence’s Isolotto district. The programme includes talks and performances featuring figures from the Italian cultural scene, including Brunori Sas, Pif and Tosca.

“Le Piazze dei Libri”, organised by Confartigianato Imprese, will return from 9 to 12 June with mobile literary events travelling through different neighbourhoods using branded vans carrying books and hosting meetings with writers and journalists. Stops are planned in Piazza della Repubblica, Via Cerretani, Anconella, Isolotto and Piazza delle Cure.

Another returning project is “Corpo Celeste – In Chiostri”, a dance and performance programme curated by choreographer Virgilio Sieni. Held from 13 to 24 July, the initiative transforms cloisters and historic religious spaces into venues for performances and discussions focused on the human body, fragility and spirituality.

Meanwhile, “Urban Pulse 2026” will run from 1 June to 19 September at the LUMEN cultural space, combining music, games, talks and multidisciplinary events. International and Italian artists scheduled to appear include British band Django Django, Dead Meadow, Crocodiles and Italian rapper Ensi.

The open-air cinema programme “Apriti Cinema” will return to Piazza de’ Pitti from 15 June to 26 July with free screenings curated by Cinema La Compagnia in collaboration with the Uffizi Galleries and several international film festivals hosted in Florence.

The Florence Dance Performing Arts Festival, now in its 37th edition, will take place from 23 June to 28 July in the cloisters of Santa Maria Novella, hosting international dance companies and orchestral performances. One of the headline events will be a multimedia version of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” performed by Portugal’s Vortice Dance Company.

Festival au Désert Firenze, organised by Fabbrica Europa, will return to the Cascine area on 3, 8 and 9 July with concerts blending African, Mediterranean and European musical traditions. Scheduled guests include Savana Funk and Tuareg musician Kader Tarhanine.

The Firenze Jazz Festival will take place from 5 to 13 September across more than 10 venues in Florence’s Oltrarno district and surrounding historic villas. Guests include jazz trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, reggae artist Alborosie and electronic-jazz collective C’mon Tigre.

Also in September, Open Air Circus will bring contemporary circus performances to the Cascine park, while the electronic music-focused Lattexplus Festival is scheduled for 12 September at the Teatro del Maggio amphitheatre.

The season will conclude with “Genius Loci”, a cultural programme hosted in the Santa Croce complex from 24 to 26 September. The initiative combines concerts, film screenings and discussions linked to the history and identity of the basilica and surrounding district. Topics this year include artificial intelligence, philosophy, medieval music and cinema.
