Falciani memorial in Florence, Italy

Memorial Day 2014 at the Falciani Cemetery

FLORENCE, ITALY – More than 500,000 Americans lost their lives in World War I and World War II defending democracy on soil and water far from the United States. The sacrifice of these men and women will be honored during ceremonies at America’s military cemeteries overseas, where more than 200,000 of these individuals are buried and memorialized.

May 26, 2014, at 11 am the Memorial Day Ceremony at Florence American Cemetery in Italy will honor the nearly 6,000 individuals buried and memorialized at this site.

The Florence American Cemetery and Memorial is located in Falciani, about 12 kilometers south of Florence, Italy, about 3 kilometres south of the Florence-Impruneta exit of the Rome-Milan autoroute. It covers about 70 acres, chiefly on the west side of the Greve river, framed by wooded hills.

Most of those buried here are from the Fifth Army who died in the fighting that followed the capture of Rome in June 1944; others fell in the heavy fighting in the Apennines between then and 2 May 1945. It is run by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
