Magnitude 4.3 Earthquake Strikes Near Pisa, Felt Across Northern Tuscany

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck near Pisa on Tuesday morning, August 4, and was felt across a large area of northern Tuscany.

According to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the earthquake occurred at 10:15 a.m. local time, with its epicentre about seven kilometres west of Pisa. The quake originated at a depth of approximately eight kilometres.

The tremor was clearly felt by residents in Pisa and surrounding areas, as well as in the neighbouring provinces of Lucca and Massa-Carrara. Reports of the earthquake also came from the Florence area, around 70 kilometres from the epicentre.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The earthquake follows a smaller tremor recorded in the same area during the night between July 30 and 31. That quake had a magnitude of 2.8, with its epicentre three kilometres from San Giuliano Terme and four kilometres from Pisa, at a depth of ten kilometres. It was also felt by residents but caused no reported damage.

INGV said the preliminary location and magnitude estimates may be updated as further seismic data are analysed.
