Giorgio De Chirico (born July 10, 1888) met Andy Warhol (born August 6, 1928) during a soiree  at the house of the Italian ambassador in New York in 1974. It was an ideal handover between the European culture, which had its roots in ancient Greek and Latin, and the United States, with its wealth of new heroes and characters.

The creator of this meeting was Carlo Bilotti, Italian-American businessman and collector. In 1982, four years after the death of De Chirico, Warhol commissioned a series of works inspired by the metaphysical painting of De Chirico. The project was realized in an exhibition entitled “Warhol vs De Chirico,” first staged in the hall of the Horatii and Curiatii at the Capitol in Rome, from 20 November 1982-31 January 1983, then to Hamburg Galerie Kammer.
