The Florence Biennale is launching a new exhibition project outside its traditional venue with a show dedicated to Hungarian artist Flóra Borsi, opening to the public in Florence on September 10.
Flóra Borsi. Animeyed will feature ten works from the artist’s Animeyed series at the Anglo American Hotel Florence, where the exhibition will remain on view until October 10. The show is the first instalment of Art Suite, a project developed by the Florence Biennale with the hotel to present contemporary art within hospitality spaces.
Borsi was a Guest of Honour at the 13th Florence Biennale in 2021. Her Animeyed series combines self-portraiture with animal imagery, aligning the artist’s face and gaze with those of different animals. The photographs explore themes including identity, perception and the relationship between humans and the natural world.
The exhibition will extend beyond the areas accessible to the general public. A copy of one of Borsi’s works will be displayed inside one of the hotel’s suites and will therefore be visible only to guests staying there. The arrangement between the public exhibition area and the private hotel room gives the Art Suite project its name.
A preview will be held on September 9 from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., with Borsi attending. The event is by invitation only, while the exhibition itself opens the following day.
Borsi works primarily with photography, self-portraiture and digital image construction. Her work has been exhibited in Europe and the United States, and she was previously included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list and named Hasselblad’s first Heroine of the Year. She has also worked with Adobe on imagery for Photoshop and Creative Cloud.
A second exhibition in October
Art Suite will continue in the autumn with a solo exhibition by Viktoria Andreeva, scheduled from October 16 to November 14. The show will focus on the photographic series used for the visual identity of the 14th Florence Biennale in 2023.
The project also forms part of the programme leading towards the next Florence Biennale. The 16th edition is scheduled to take place at Florence’s Fortezza da Basso from October 23 to 31, 2027. Its theme will be Beyond the Sense of Time – Memory, Caducity and Eternity in Contemporary Art and Design.
