Snow has fallen across the Apennines and volcanic reliefs of southern Tuscany, affecting ski and high-altitude areas. According to the regional government, around 42 centimetres of snow were recorded in Abetone, a popular mountain resort on the border with Emilia-Romagna, about 65 kilometres north of Florence. At Foce a Giovo, a mountain pass nearby, snowfall reached about 40 centimetres.
The heaviest accumulation was reported on the summit of Mount Amiata, where up to 47 centimetres of fresh snow were measured. The Amiata massif lies in southern Tuscany, between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto.
Regional president Eugenio Giani said snow is currently affecting areas above 1,000 metres and urged drivers to use caution, reminding motorists that winter tyres or snow chains are mandatory on mountain roads under these conditions.
Rivers monitored amid yellow alert
Tuscany is currently under a yellow alert for hydrogeological and hydraulic risk, issued due to precipitation affecting parts of the region. Giani said that river levels are being closely monitored by the Regione Toscana civil protection system and that the situation remains under control.
Several rivers, including the Pesa, Merse, Cecina and Bruna, have reached first-level attention thresholds at specific monitoring points, meaning increased observation but no immediate critical conditions. Authorities reported no major issues along the Arno River, Tuscany’s main river, nor along other key waterways such as the Ombrone Pistoiese and the Bisenzio.
Residents and visitors travelling in mountainous areas are advised to check road conditions, follow local restrictions, and stay updated through official regional bulletins, especially as weather conditions may change quickly at higher elevations.
