Florence Approves Stricter Noise Rules for the Historic Center

Florence has taken a new step to curb noise pollution by updating its Noise Regulation and Acoustic Classification Plan, measures that will now go before the city council for final approval. The initiative, promoted by deputy mayor and environment councillor Paola Galgani, aims to balance urban development with public health and the quality of life of residents.

The new regulation replaces the previous framework from 2004, introducing clearer procedures for authorizing temporary events, construction sites, and other sources of noise. At the same time, the updated Acoustic Classification Plan redefines the city’s “noise map,” assigning maximum limits to different areas of Florence depending on their use.

The historic center, stretching from Piazza San Lorenzo to Piazza della Signoria, has been classified as a “mixed-use area.” Here, daytime noise must remain just below the level of a normal conversation, while at night only the very low sound typical of a library is considered acceptable. In practical terms, this means that loud activities will be tightly restricted to protect both residents and the cultural environment.

Even stricter limits apply to areas such as Careggi and the Meyer Children’s Hospital, where night-time thresholds are comparable to a whisper. By contrast, industrial zones on the outskirts of the city may reach up to 65 decibels at any hour of the day.

The new plan also aligns Florence with neighboring municipalities, expands the protection of parks and hillside areas, and regulates zones intended for public events. Special attention has been given to infrastructure such as the tram lines, with updated “buffer zones” to protect surrounding neighborhoods.

By tightening the rules, the city administration seeks to make Florence not only more livable and safer for residents, but also more respectful of its unique historic and cultural heritage.
