On September 8, 1504, Florence witnessed the unveiling of a masterpiece that would become one of the most powerful symbols of the city’s identity: Michelangelo’s David. More than five centuries later, the anniversary still recalls the pride and ambition of Renaissance Florence.
Originally commissioned by the Cathedral Works Office on August 16, 1501, the statue was intended for the buttresses of Santa Maria del Fiore. Michelangelo, then in his twenties, was entrusted with a block of marble that had already been worked on and abandoned by two other sculptors. Against all odds, he transformed it into a colossal figure of youthful strength, standing 5.17 meters tall and weighing more than 5.5 tons.
In January 1504, a special commission of Florence’s leading artists — including Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, Filippino Lippi, and Pietro Perugino — decided that the statue should not be placed high on the cathedral but at ground level, in front of Palazzo Vecchio. There, it became the emblem of civic freedom and independence, a clear statement of Florence’s republican spirit.

When unveiled to the public on September 8, 1504, the statue caused immediate admiration. Contemporary accounts describe astonishment not only at the beauty of the sculpture but also at Michelangelo’s technical daring in extracting such vitality from a block of marble considered nearly unusable. Originally, some elements were gilded — a garland on the head, the supporting trunk behind the right leg, and the sling itself.
The David has undergone careful conservation over the centuries, including a major cleaning in 2003–2004. The original is housed in the Galleria dell’Accademia, while one of its replicas can be admired in front of Palazzo Vecchio.
Today, it continues to be monitored and lightly dusted as part of regular maintenance, ensuring that Florence’s most famous symbol remains as striking as it was on that September day more than 500 years ago.
