MotoGP at Mugello Draws Record Crowd and Honors Local Legacy

The Mugello Circuit in the Tuscan hills near Florence hosted a spectacular edition of the Italian MotoGP this weekend, attracting more than 166,000 spectators over three days and reaffirming its status as a world-class motorsport venue and a major driver of local tourism and visibility.

Attendance figures saw a 6% increase compared to 2024, with 84,625 fans attending on Sunday alone. The race weekend was marked not only by Marc Marquez’s impressive victory on a Ducati, but also by the region’s celebration of the circuit’s deep connection to the territory.

The race itself delivered excitement from start to finish. Marc Marquez secured his first MotoGP win at Mugello since 2014, leading a Ducati-dominated podium. He was followed by his brother Alex Marquez in second place and Fabio Di Giannantonio in third. Local favorite Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia, winner of the past three Italian GPs, finished fourth. With this win, Marquez strengthens his lead in the world championship standings, now 40 points ahead of his brother.

Florence Mayor and Metropolitan Mayor Sara Funaro attended the event and awarded the Fiorino d’Oro — Florence’s highest civic honor — to Paolo Poli, director of the Mugello Circuit. Poli has led the venue for over 35 years, helping it grow into a hub of international attention and economic opportunity for the area. Funaro described the circuit as “a true excellence of our territory,” underlining its role in promoting both local municipalities and Tuscany as a whole.

Regional President Eugenio Giani echoed the sentiment, pledging continued support from the Tuscany Region to ensure the Mugello remains home to the Italian Grand Prix. Giani also expressed his hope for the return of Formula 1 to the circuit, following the one-off 2020 Tuscan GP held during the pandemic.

Both leaders emphasized the need for improved infrastructure and road access, noting ongoing investments and cooperation with ANCI and national institutions to enhance the area’s transport network, including upgrades to the Via Faentina.
