Teatro della Toscana and Maggio Musicale Join Forces for a New Open-Air Cultural Format

Maggio and Teatro della Toscana Launch Summer Collaboration

Two of Florence’s major cultural institutions, the Teatro della Toscana and the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, are joining forces to launch a groundbreaking new format that blends music, theatre, and collective writing. The initiative, titled “Maggio & Teatro della Toscana insieme sotto le stelle”, will take place on July 8 and 16 in the open-air cavea of the Teatro del Maggio.

The concept is inspired by the successful Scuola Popolare di Scrittura (People’s Writing School) created by writer and theatre director Stefano Massini, who also serves as the artistic director of Teatro della Toscana. This new venture invites the public to actively participate, writing in response to live musical performances and thematic prompts.

Each evening will host up to 2,000 participants and will explore the theme of anger. The July 8 event will feature a musical journey through 18th-century compositions, while the July 16 evening will center around Mozart’s Don Giovanni. The music will act as both atmosphere and inspiration, guiding attendees in a shared writing experience.

The project was presented at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence with the presence of Massini, Teatro del Maggio superintendent Carlo Fuortes, Florence mayor and president of both institutions Sara Funaro, and Tuscany’s regional president Eugenio Giani.

The initiative is described as something entirely new—not a traditional concert or theatre performance, but a hybrid experience where audiences become co-creators. Participants will be led in reflective and creative exercises, responding in real time to music and thematic storytelling.

This is just the beginning. Massini also announced that the Scuola Popolare di Scrittura will return in the upcoming season, moving to Teatro di Rifredi and focusing on the theme of time. The program will culminate in a major event at Florence’s Mandela Forum, where 7,000 participants from across Italy—divided between over-75s and under-25s—will take part in a large-scale, music-driven writing performance with the Maggio Musicale orchestra.
