The stunning Sammezzano Castle, located in Reggello, Florence, is set to go under the hammer once more. With a starting bid of €15.7 million, the auction will take place on March 27, 2025, at 3 PM in the courthouse of Arezzo. Prospective buyers must submit their offers by March 25, 2025, at the same time.
Built in the early 17th century, the castle was transformed in the 19th century by Marquis Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes d’Aragona, who turned it into Italy’s most important example of Orientalist architecture. The Marquis’ vision resulted in a breathtaking blend of Moorish, Indian, and Persian influences, with intricate details that evoke the grandeur of the Alhambra and the Taj Mahal.
The property up for auction includes 13 buildings and approximately 165 hectares of land. However, the castle, once a masterpiece of craftsmanship and imagination, is now in a state of significant disrepair.
A Historical and Architectural Gem
The castle’s history is as fascinating as its architecture. Initially constructed as a simple hunting lodge, it gained prominence after the Marquis undertook an ambitious project to transform it into a fantastical palace. The interiors feature vividly colored stucco work, elaborate tile mosaics, and unique rooms like the Peacock Room, famous for its kaleidoscopic ceiling patterns, and the White Room, a space that radiates serene elegance.
Sammezzano’s extensive grounds include a large park, originally designed to host exotic plant species imported by the Marquis. This green expanse is now part of the castle’s charm, despite years of neglect.
The castle has been listed for sale several times in recent decades, and numerous restoration projects have been proposed but never realized. Advocates of cultural heritage preservation hope that this auction will attract a buyer capable of restoring the castle to its former glory and ensuring public access to its splendor.
For architecture lovers and cultural investors, Sammezzano Castle represents not only a rare piece of history but also a unique opportunity to revitalize one of Italy’s hidden treasures.
