FLORENCE, ITALY – The work of late Gothic Florentine painter Giovanni dal Ponte is on display in Florence.
Giovanni dal Ponte (1385 – 1437/38). Protagonist of late Gothic Florentine humanism, running until March 17, 2017, presents around 50 works from Italian and foreign collections including the early 15th-century Tuscan master’s ‘Coronation of the Virgin with four saints’ at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence.
The exhibition intends to bridge a gap in knowledge of the artist who played an important role in the development of Florentine early Renaissance painting, with works spanning his entire production.
The triptych from the museum of San Donnino in Campi Bisenzio, created for the church of Sant’Andrea in Brozzi, illustrates the influence of Gherardo Starnina on dal Ponte’s early development with his exuberant and profane interpretation of the late Gothic tradition.
Many of the works on show, including the Coronation of the Virgin with four saints from the Academy’s own collection, have been specially restored for the occasion.
Giovanni dal Ponte is known for genre works and historical allegories as well as religious works. His output was very varied and prolific production. He produced fresco cycles and panels and also decorated small objects.
