FLORENCE, ITALY – In Italy 14,000 cultural heritage sites are at risk of landslides and 28,483 at risk from flooding, a joint study by the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) and the Higher Institute for Conservation and Restoration (ISCR) said Tuesday March 3rd, 2015.
In Florence the study said 1,145 cultural heritage sites were at risk from flooding with a recurrence interval of up to 200 years. These include the Basilica of Santa Croce, national library, Baptistery and Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.
Volterra, which saw part of its medieval walls crumble last year, Civita di Bagnoregio near Viterbo and Certaldo near Firenze are among the numerous historic towns at risk of landslides up and down the peninsula, ISPRA and ISCR said.
In Rome 2,204 monuments are exposed to the risk of flooding with a return period of up to 500 years. These include sites in the historic centre including Piazza Navona, Piazza del Popolo and the Pantheon.
