Florence to name Maggio Musicale theatre after conductor Vittorio Gui

The main theatre of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence will be officially named after conductor Vittorio Gui, following a decision approved by the city council’s executive committee at Palazzo Vecchio.

The measure was proposed by Caterina Biti, Florence’s councillor responsible for toponymy, and endorsed by the municipal government. The decision follows an appeal launched in December by conductor Riccardo Muti, who called for a formal recognition of Gui’s role in the history of Florence’s musical life.

Vittorio Gui founded the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale in 1928 and later created the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival in 1933. The festival, one of the oldest opera and classical music festivals in Italy, has played a central role in shaping the city’s international reputation in the performing arts.

Mayor Sara Funaro said the dedication recognises Gui’s contribution to Florence’s cultural identity in the 20th century. According to the mayor, the conductor helped transform the city into a major centre for music and left a lasting mark on Italy’s cultural landscape.

The city administration said that naming public places after notable figures is part of a broader effort to preserve Florence’s historical memory and make it visible in everyday urban spaces.

Once the process is completed, the theatre complex of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino — located near the Cascine park and inaugurated in its current form in 2011 — will formally bear the name of Vittorio Gui, honouring the founder of the festival that continues to define Florence’s operatic tradition.
