FLORENCE, ITALY – In Italy breakfast does not play an important role as other meals of the day. Breakfast in Italy is nothing more than having a quick snack along with a coffee in front of the bar before going to work. However, we are speaking about Italian food so the food is naturally delicious.
The most common Italian breakfast is a cappuccino or a caffè with a dessert. The type of dessert depends on the region you are in. A typical Florentine breakfast dessert can be schiacciata alla fiorentina available only in January and February, the zuccotto and budino di riso. Florentines also eat other types of sweets that are not part of their tradition like crostata, bignè, and cannolo.
As for the croissant, it has a different name in different regions. In Florence we call it brioche. In central Italy they say cornetto. Pay attention because in Sicily brioche is a local kind of sweet pastry, round and with a smaller round top, served with gelato. They actually call it brioscia.
Five places which serve Italian breakfast:
Pasticceria Marino is a traditional Italian bar frequented by many Italians who work near by. It is located close to ponte alla Carraia in Oltrarno district. You can find handmade desserts and also panini for those how prefer a salty breakfast.

Pitta M’Ingolli is a bar located in Piazza Santo Spirito. This bar will not only offer you a good breakfast but also the possibility to eat outdoors in this beautiful square.
Caffè Gilli is a bar that began its tradition in 1733, it is located in the Piazza della Repubblica. It doesn’t need recommendations. You just have to look at its shop windows to see how wonderful it is!
Caffè Paszkowski is another historic café in Florence, also located in the Piazza della Repubblica. You can find the perfect combination among the excellent coffees and handmade desserts.
Last but not least is the Bar Pasticceria Deanna positioned near to the Santa Maria Novella Station. It is a little bit crowded, however, it offers you delicious handmade sweets. My favorite one is the croissant with pistachio cream or almond cream and a cappuccino.
