FLORENCE, ITALY – Rebecca Garden, PhD, Associate Professor Bioethics &, Upstate Medical University (Syracuse, NY); Exec. Director, Consortium for Culture & Medicine presents “First Person, Culture, Place and Society: The Humanities and Health Care”, September 5, 2012, 10,30-12,00 am, at the “Aula Magna”, presidency of the Medicine faculty, Careggi, Florence.
This talk provides an overview of how a field called the health humanities (also known as the medical humanities or narrative medicine) draws together a range of disciplines and the arts in a movement that builds advocacy for those who are ill and disabled. Beginning with first-person accounts of illness and disability, the health humanities investigate the point of view of those who seek health care and educates health care providers and others about the socio-cultural factors that shape their experiences, factors such as class, culture, environment, and community.
Prof Garden will outline a new model to approach to health care keeping in mind the key word : compassion for the patient.
