New visitor rules introduced across Accademia and Bargello museums

Visitors to some of Florence’s most important museums will find a new, unified set of rules governing admission, tickets and behaviour inside the venues.

The Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze e Musei del Bargello (GAMB) has introduced new regulations applying across the seven sites it manages: the Accademia Gallery, Bargello National Museum, Medici Chapels, Orsanmichele, Palazzo Davanzati, Casa Martelli and the former Church of San Procolo. The last two are currently closed for restoration work.

The measures were approved by the institution’s Board of Directors on July 24 and include both regulations for museum visits and general conditions for purchasing admission tickets. The ticket conditions state that buying a ticket implies acceptance of the new rules.

According to GAMB, the aim is to establish common standards across museums that differ considerably in size, layout and the nature of the works they preserve, while improving security and making visiting conditions clearer.

Named tickets and ID checks

Among the most relevant changes for visitors are stricter rules concerning tickets purchased online or through the call centre, which are issued in the visitor’s name. Museum staff may ask for a valid identity document to check that the name corresponds to the person using the ticket. The check is visual and personal data from the document are not recorded or retained.

Private customers can purchase a maximum of ten tickets in a single online transaction. Changes to the name on a ticket are allowed only once and must normally be requested at least 24 hours before the visit, in cases including obvious typing errors or serious documented reasons preventing the original holder from attending. Tickets are generally neither refundable nor eligible for rescheduling.

New rules for groups and guides

The rules also introduce clearer limits for organised groups. Groups can normally include no more than 20 participants, excluding the guide, while school groups can include up to 25 students plus at least one accompanying adult. Groups must arrive at their booked time, with delays of more than 15 minutes not accepted.

Groups of six or more are required to use radio-guide or “whisper” systems where applicable, rather than explanations delivered aloud inside museum spaces.

No misleading “skip the line” offers

Another section addresses tour operators and travel agencies, particularly the way museum tickets are marketed online. Operators are prohibited from advertising services using expressions that could mislead visitors about access arrangements, including “skip the line”, “fast track”, “priority entrance” and similar terms when such services are not actually provided by GAMB.

They are also barred from presenting themselves as official GAMB resellers without specific authorisation.

Bags, security checks and storage

Security and practical rules for visitors have also been standardised. Metal detector checks may be carried out at museum entrances, while knives and other objects considered dangerous are prohibited. Large bags, backpacks, helmets and other items exceeding 40 x 30 x 18 centimetres cannot be taken inside.

GAMB does not operate cloakrooms or luggage-storage facilities. Small lockers are available at the Bargello, Medici Chapels and Palazzo Davanzati, but there is currently no storage facility at the Accademia Gallery or Orsanmichele.

Animals are not admitted, with exceptions including guide and assistance dogs and certified animals used for assisted therapy.

Special access at Orsanmichele and Michelangelo’s Secret Room

Special arrangements remain in place for two particularly sensitive sites. On Sundays, visitors can enter the Church of Orsanmichele between 12:20 pm and 1:30 pm while a religious service is taking place, provided they behave respectfully.

Access to Michelangelo’s Secret Room at the Medici Chapels remains limited for conservation reasons and advance booking is always compulsory.

Opening hours

The GAMB museums are generally open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:15 am to 6:50 pm, with Orsanmichele closing at 6:30 pm. The last admission is 40 minutes before closing and all sites are closed on Mondays.
The new rules are part of the process of consolidating GAMB as a single museum system under director general Andreina Contessa, while maintaining the specific requirements of each individual site.
