Spanish police officers join patrols in central Florence

Two officers from Spain’s national police force have joined Italian police patrols in Florence as part of an international cooperation programme aimed at public safety and crime prevention.

The officers have been working for several days alongside personnel from the Florence Questura, the provincial headquarters of Italy’s State Police, according to a statement issued on Friday, 28 August, 2026.

They are accompanying patrol officers through streets and squares in the historic centre, travelling on Florence’s tram system and taking part in public-order services scheduled in the city.

Florence police chief Fausto Lamparelli formally welcomed the two Spanish officers.

The initiative is part of a programme coordinated by Italy’s Department of Public Security through its international police cooperation service. Similar joint patrols involving officers from other countries have been organised in Italy during the summer tourist season for several years.

Police said the presence of Spanish officers can also help with communication and information for Spanish-speaking visitors, who make up a significant part of Florence’s international tourist population.

The programme is intended both to support day-to-day policing in areas with large numbers of visitors and to encourage professional cooperation between police forces from different European countries.
