FLORENCE, ITALY – The IX Florence Biennale 2013 will take place at the historic Fortezza da Basso from November 30 to December 8, 2013, in Florence, Italy.
Each edition of the Florence Biennale, founded in 1997, is one of the largest events representing artists from around the world, with participants from 80 countries and more than 2500 works displayed. The exhibition areas are energized by a myriad of events and performances, making it possible to admire a variety of styles, artistic trends and new frontiers of international contemporary art.
In 2001 the Florence Biennale became an official partner in the United Nations’ “Dialogue Among Civilizations” program which aims to promote dialogue between peoples of diverse cultures through artistic expression. In eight editions, over five thousand artists from all over the world have come together, making the Florence Biennale one of the few international events capable of offering a complete overview of contemporary artistic production on an international level.
The Lorenzo il Magnifico International Award was introduced at the first Biennale in 1997. At every edition this award celebrates the career achievements of top international artists. The last edition of the Biennale had the honor of hosting the fashion designer and stylist Agatha Ruiz de la Prada and the great maestro José Luis Cuevas who received the Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award. At previous editions the award has been presented to artists such as Chen Cheng Hsiung, David Hockney, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Gilbert & George, Marina Abramovic and Shu Yong.
The prestigious Lorenzo il Magnifico Award is presented during an official ceremony to participating artists considered to be particularly praiseworthy by the Members of the International Jury, made up of eminent figures on the international art and culture scene. The 2013 members of the International Jury are: Stefano Francolini, Matty Roca, Elza Ajzenberg, Dominique E. Baechler, R.B. Bhaskaran, Gregorio Luke, Francesco Buranelli, Gerfried Stocker, Maurizio Vanni and Rolando Bellini.
After the great success of the SIT-IN Florence project during the last edition, we aim to continue developing projects involving education and increase of artistic and cultural awareness throughout the territory. For the next edition, a series of venues in and around Florence will be selected where exhibitions, performances and events will be held for youth and public at large depicting the “contemporary”. In addition a series of conferences will be presented with guests including international experts to discuss various issues in the world art market today.
