Florentine New Year’s Day, celebrations is coming

FLORENCE, ITALY – Two exceptional events will celebrate the “Florentine New Year” on Sunday: the “Award of Arts 2012” and the arrival of the exhibition “America’s Amerigo” dedicated to Amerigo Vespucci.

The Arts Award is organized by “Florentines in the World” association, with the Academy of Arts and Design and the Rotary Club, to be held in the assembly hall. The award is given to people of art and culture that have made Florence great in the world. This year winners are Luciano Artusi (literary arts), Marcello Guasti (visual arts) and Narciso Parigi (sound art).

Celebrations will continue at European School of Economics, where it take place the inauguration of the exhibition “America’s Amerigo – Florence and the merchants of the New World” back from New York. More than 2.000 visitors in 5 days of exposure in St. John’s University, Manhattan.

The opening of the exhibition will be preceded by a brief conference with the president of the Municipal Council of Florence Eugenio Giani, the Consul General of the United States Sarah Chaddock Morrison, president of the Florentines in the World Andrea Claudio Galluzzo, director of the European School of Economics Stefano Cordero di Montezemolo, the delegate of the Florentines in the World in Madrid Stefano Galli Rosi, president of the committee “Vespucci in his house” Massimo Ruffilli, plus Nicola Cecchi and Alessandro Luzzi (Tuscany in the World).

Exposure bilingual – English and Italian – said through a historical and iconographical pattern the exploits of explorer Vespucci and his skills by highlighting culture and characteristics of the Florentine merchant of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The exhibition will be accompanied also by the edition of a historical essay published by Gallorosso. A short film by Thomas Conforti will tell his life through images of the most salient Vespucci’s places. Florentines in the World dedicated to Vespucci also a special commemorative medal in bronze by Alessandro Luzzi.

“This biographical show wants to break away from stereotypes over Vespucci – says Galluzzo – defining the career of Amerigo, the first capable merchant and explorer. It’s the celebration of one of the greatest Florentines of all ages”.
