Italy’s network of state museums, monuments and archaeological sites recorded 60.8 million visits in 2024, according to figures released by the Ministry of Culture. It is the highest total since the ministry began publishing comparable data in 2014.
The ministry said the result confirms a trend of steady growth since the post-pandemic reopening. State sites registered 47 million visits in 2022 and 57.7 million in 2023, before reaching nearly 61 million last year. Gross revenues for 2024 were reported at about €382 million.
Officials described the rise as evidence of a broader and more diverse public engaging with Italy’s cultural heritage. They attributed the trend to an expanded range of exhibitions and activities, as well as improved visitor services.
Between 2022 and 2024, attendance increased by roughly 29%. The ministry noted that both footfall and revenues indicate a stable three-year recovery, with 2024 exceeding pre-pandemic levels.
According to previously published data for individual sites, the Uffizi Galleries in Florence ranked second nationally in 2024 with 5,294,968 visitors and gross revenues of €61.9 million. Meanwhile, the Galleria dell’Accademia recorded over 2.1 million visitors and gross revenues of €17.1 million.
