Florence Issues Heat Warning

Florence Issues Heat Warning: Orange Alert for Saturday, Red Alert on Sunday

The national heatwave monitoring system coordinated by Italy’s Ministry of Health has issued an orange-level heat alert for Florence on Saturday, June 14, followed by a red-level alert for Sunday, June 15. The forecast comes from the regional public health department and reflects the rising health risks associated with extreme heat conditions.

Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 36° on Saturday and 37°C on Sunday, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable individuals such as older adults, young children, and people with chronic conditions. City officials and health authorities are urging residents and visitors to take precautions, especially as the hot weather is expected to intensify through the weekend.

To help the public cope with high temperatures, health authorities have released a list of key recommendations:

10 Tips to Stay Safe During the Heatwave

  1. Avoid the sun during peak hours: Stay indoors or in shaded areas between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., when temperatures are at their highest.
  2. Keep indoor environments cool: Use blinds or shutters on south- and southwest-facing windows. Air conditioning can help but should be set between 25–27°C with low humidity to avoid sudden thermal shock. Avoid directing fans or AC vents directly onto the body, especially for the elderly or bedridden.
  3. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty. Fresh fruit is also a good source of hydration. People with medical conditions or those on specific medications should consult a doctor before increasing fluid intake.
  4. Limit caffeine and avoid alcohol, which can worsen dehydration.
  5. Eat light: Prefer small, cool meals. Heavy digestion increases body heat.
  6. Dress appropriately: Wear light, loose-fitting clothes made of cotton or linen. Outdoors, use light-colored hats and UV-protective sunglasses. Children should be dressed with special care.
  7. Travel safely: Before driving, ventilate your car, especially if parked in the sun. Set the car’s internal temperature no more than 5°C below the outside. Keep water in the car and never leave children, pets, or vulnerable persons inside unattended.
  8. Avoid physical activity during the hottest hours: If exercising, stay hydrated and gradually adapt to the heat. Take frequent breaks in cool areas and consider electrolyte supplements if necessary.
  9. Check on at-risk individuals: Offer help to elderly neighbors, infants, and those with mobility issues. Reduced ability to carry out basic activities may signal health decline in older adults. Monitor children’s body temperature and use lukewarm baths to cool them down.
  10. Protect pets: Provide fresh water and ensure they stay in shaded areas.

Florence residents are encouraged to follow these guidelines and check in with those who might need help. The city’s health services will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.
