Pope Francis: Church to be restless, innovative

FLORENCE, ITALY – Pope Francis said Tuesday November 10, 2015, that he wanted to see the Italian Church be “restless” and innovative during a visit to Tuscany.

“I like a restless Italian Church, one that is increasingly close to the abandoned, to the forgotten, to the imperfect,” Francis told an Italian Church convention in Florence. “I want a happy Church with the face of a mum, which understands, accompanies and caresses. You too should dream of this Church, believe in it, innovate with freedom”.

Pope Francis, addressing at the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral, also said that members of the Catholic Church must not focus on accumulating power. “We must not be obsessed by power, even when this takes the face of power that is useful and functional to the social image of the Church,” the pope told an Italian Church convention. “If the Church does not take on the sentiments of Jesus, it gets disorientated and loses sense”.
