The year 2012 marks the fifth centennial of the death of Amerigo Vespucci, one of the discoverers of the American continents and, especially, the one who gave his name to the new lands. The Superintendent intends to commemorate the great navigator who was born in Florence in 1454, with an exhibition (July 3-Decembre 8 at Andito degli Angiolini and Galleria del Costume) dedicated to the native inhabitants of North America.

The controversial crucifix in the Bargello
It is shown at the Museum of the Bargello in Florence The “Crucifixion” attributed to Michelangelo. The Italian state had purchased the “Crucifixion” in 2008 for 3 million and 250 thousand euros from an antique shop in Turin. The Corte dei Conti suggests that they have paid too much, based on expert opinions that refer to a maximum of 700-800 thousand euros.
Open day at the Uffizi Library with 78,600 titles
Today, Friday, March 30 the Uffizi Library will be open for an Open Day from 2 to 5 pm. During the extraordinary opening to the general public, the staff will be on hand to listen to the history of the Library and its collections and let see some of the most significant works, watch the process of binding of a book or a periodical collection, learn about the life of a magazine in the library, see the evolution of the book through time.
Ambone, rejected projects of great architects
The realization of the “Ambone”, a sort of new pulpit, in the Duomo of Florence remains an open question. “The jury is not having reached a reasonable unanimity of judgment, held that none of the projects presented is worthy of achievement, while appreciating the efforts and intentions of artists and architects” participants, including Mario Botta, Massimo Lippi and Paul Henry Savelli Zermani.
The Int’l gothic style at the Uffizi gallery
This year, the rooms on the main floor of the Galleria degli Uffizi will host an important exhibition that intends to reconstruct the panorama of Florentine art in the wonderful and crucial period that extended roughly from 1375 to 1440. It will be held from June 19th to November 4th, 2012 at the Galleria degli Uffizi.
Japan in Florence, land of enchantment
This coming spring 2012 Palazzo Pitti will celebrate Japan, her art, her culture, and her traditions, in the most representative rooms of its museums with three exhibitions grouped under the title, Japan. Land of Enchantment (April 3th – july 1st, 2012).
Myths and stories in Reinassance maiolica
This coming spring (May 16th-September 16th), the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy, proposes an exhibition dedicated to Renaissance “istoriata” maiolica, the tin-glazed earthenware featuring narrative scenes and/or figurative subjects, which dates from this period, and its direct dependency on literary, historical and figurative sources.
