Il crocifisso del maestro di Figline was restored

Restored thanks to Friends of FlorenceFLORENCE, ITALY – Many flock from all over the world to visit the Basilica in Santa Croce to admire both the church itself, and the artwork inside. The famous “Il Cristo Crocifissio del Maestro di Figline” has finally returned to the church, after a long restoration project that began in 2009. On Friday, October 5th 2012, a press conference was held in the Basilica to discuss the project and to celebrate its completion. The conference began with an overview of the entire project and concluded with drinks to congratulate all involved.

The restoration could not have been a success without the help of the Friends of Florence Organization and the Opera di Santa Croce. Together, they helped to provide the funding necessary for the extensive restoration, raising over €163,000, from many generous donors.

This is the first time that Friends of Florence has worked to restore one of the pieces in Santa Croce. The restoration of the crucifix was a part of the larger restoration of the entire chapel in Florence. The project was completed in September 2012.

Muriel Vervat and Roberto Buda were responsible for the remarkable restoration. With the supervision of Brunella Teodori, they were able to restore the crucifix while keeping its stunning beauty in tact. Many see this piece as a symbol of not only Santa Croce, but of the whole city. The public is very happy to have this beautiful treasure back in its true home.
