Work on Florence’s tramway network is entering a new phase in early January 2026, with updated construction layouts affecting piazza Beccaria, viale Europa and parts of viale Matteotti. The works are part of the tram line under construction towards Bagno a Ripoli, in the south-east of the city.
Piazza Beccaria: urban works from January 7
From Tuesday January 7, 2026, works in piazza Beccaria will move into a phase focused on urban redesign on both sides of the square. The interventions will involve lane reductions and parking bans.
On the Borgo La Croce side, near the cinema, the public transport stop will be temporarily moved to via Manzoni, while the taxi rank will be relocated to piazza Piave. On the opposite side of the square, works will affect the stretch between viale Amendola and via Gioberti, again with reduced carriageways and no parking.
Gavinana and viale Europa: lane reductions and closures
In the Gavinana area, also from 7 January, utility works are planned at the junction between viali Giannotti–Europa and via Canto del Paradiso. The works will leave one outbound lane available for traffic leaving the city, while the access from via Canto del Paradiso onto the main roads will be closed until the end of the month.
Further changes will affect viale Europa. From the evening of 7 January (starting at 9 p.m.), water network works will reduce the central section of the road between numbers 12 and 26. One lane in each direction will remain open along the sides of the site until 21 January.
From 9 January, the construction layout along viale Europa will also be reorganised. Between piazza Nencini and viuzzo delle Lame, works will remain on the Arno side, with traffic shifted to the via di Ripoli side and the temporary removal of the bus lane. Between via Svezia and via Andorra, the construction site will move to the via di Ripoli side, with traffic running on the opposite side, again one lane per direction. In this section, the side roads will remain usable. The stretch between via Andorra and via Olanda will keep the current layout, with works on the Arno side.
Additional lane reductions are expected in via San Marino and via Svezia. This overall configuration is scheduled to remain in place until the end of February.
Works on viale Matteotti continue at night
Meanwhile, tram construction continues on viale Matteotti, where concrete pouring and track installation are under way. Night-time lane reductions are in place to limit daytime disruption.
Looking ahead: Libertà–Rovezzano line
Beyond the current works, the city administration has confirmed the next major expansion of the network. The planned tram line linking piazza della Libertà to Rovezzano, known as Line 3.2.2, is expected to enter construction in July 2026 and be completed by May 2029.
The 6.1-kilometre line will include 15 stops and represents an investment of around €360 million. According to the Comune di Firenze, the project aims to significantly reduce car traffic along the eastern side of the city and improve connections between residential districts and the historic centre.
Practical information
Drivers and residents are advised to expect delays, especially during peak hours, and to pay attention to temporary signage. Public transport routes and stops may change during the works. The municipality recommends checking the city’s official mobility channels for updates as construction progresses.
