New bridge installed as Florence rail disruption continues until 30 July 2026

Train services through the Florence railway hub remain suspended until Wednesday morning, with replacement transport operating for passengers.

Supporters say their preservation would not interfere with the construction of Florence’s new tramway line.

Train traffic will stop from late 26 July until 30 July as RFI installs a new railway overpass.

The project aims to improve public transport in the city’s north-west, reduce travel times and support wider urban regeneration.

The cost of a single journey on Florence’s buses and tramway will increase from €1.70 to €2.

Six stops on the viali will be equipped with covered shelters, seating and digital services, after a redesign agreed with heritage authorities.

The new digital tool aims to make public transport more predictable and less stressful for people on the autism spectrum and their families.

Construction had been halted in December after the discovery of well-preserved medieval city walls beneath the square.

Ridership rose by more than 15% year on year, driven largely by the extension of the airport line into the historic centre.

Traffic restrictions and site changes are coming to several areas of Florence from January 7, 2026.
