A new AI-powered surveillance system will soon be active at Villa Costanza, the park-and-ride facility located directly off the A1 motorway near Florence. The system is designed to automatically detect and report suspicious behavior, enhancing security at one of the most important multimodal transport access points in the metropolitan area.
Villa Costanza is a unique infrastructure in Italy. It allows drivers traveling on the A1 highway to exit directly into the parking facility without leaving the motorway network. From there, they can take Florence’s T1 tram line, which connects Scandicci to the city center, offering a convenient and sustainable option for commuters and tourists heading into Florence without the stress of city traffic.
Developed by Autostrade per l’Italia (Aspi), the new surveillance system employs artificial intelligence to monitor activity within the area in real time. The technology can identify potentially dangerous or unusual situations and alert law enforcement automatically, reducing response times and increasing the overall safety of the parking area.
The AI upgrade is part of a broader security plan for Villa Costanza. In addition to the new system, private security personnel will continue to patrol the site in coordination with local law enforcement. A technical working group at the Florence police headquarters is expected to finalize operational protocols within the coming days, and the AI system should be fully functional within ten days.
Villa Costanza serves thousands of people every day and plays a crucial role in the region’s sustainable mobility strategy. The introduction of intelligent surveillance marks a significant step forward in ensuring a safer and more efficient experience for all users.
