Record Start to 2025 for Florence and Pisa Airports

Toscana Aeroporti, the company managing Florence and Pisa airports, has announced record passenger figures for the first quarter of 2025, confirming the strong appeal of Tuscany’s airport system. In the first three months of the year, the two airports handled over 1.6 million passengers, marking a 10.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This performance not only sets a new record for the January-March period but also exceeds the national airport system’s growth rate of 7.6%.

Expanded Flight Network for Summer 2025

The upcoming summer season brings an expanded flight offer for both airports:

  • Pisa Airport (PSA) strengthens its network with Ryanair introducing three new routes (Sofia, Warsaw Chopin, Amman), bringing its destinations to 58. Wizzair adds two more (Warsaw Chopin and Katowice). Flydubai resumes its year-round connection to Dubai. Other airlines such as easyJet, Jet2.com, Eurowings, Norwegian, SAS, and AirBaltic are boosting their seasonal flights, including a new easyJet service to London Southend.
  • Florence Airport (FLR) adds new connections as well. Volotea introduces a flight to Alghero, bringing its destinations from Florence to 12, while Vueling opens a new route to Brussels, now serving 10 destinations. Air Corsica (Nice), Air Serbia (Belgrade), and L’Odissey (Geneva/Tours) expand Florence’s network. Air France, British Airways, and Air Dolomiti increase frequencies to major European hubs, and SAS and Widerøe confirm the return of key seasonal routes.

Both airports have also resumed flights to Elba Island through the operator SmallFly.

Passenger and Cargo Traffic on the Rise

  • Pisa Airport recorded 958,480 passengers in the first quarter, a 12.1% increase over 2024. Both domestic (+19.5%) and international (+9.1%) traffic rose significantly. Italy remains the top market (30.9%), followed by Spain (16.7%) and the UK (13.8%). Pisa’s load factor reached 87.3%, and cargo volumes rose by 3.6% to 3,209 tonnes, mainly thanks to DHL’s increased operations.
  • Florence Airport welcomed 674,443 passengers, up 7.9% year-on-year. Domestic traffic grew by 11.4%, while international traffic increased by 7.4%. France leads as the main market (23.6%), followed by Spain (18%) and Italy (15.6%). Flight movements grew by 5.4%, while the load factor slightly decreased to 78.4%.

Strong April Results and Positive Outlook

April 2025 continued the positive trend, with over 900,000 passengers, up 11.1% compared to April 2024. This brings the total for the first four months to 2.5 million passengers, marking a 10.6% growth over the same period last year.

Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, Toscana Aeroporti expects 2025 to surpass 2024 in terms of passenger numbers, in line with IATA forecasts. The company remains focused on strategic projects, including the approval process for Florence’s Master Plan and the expansion of Pisa’s arrival terminal.

A Message from the President

“We begin 2025 with record-breaking results that confirm the growing appeal of our airport system,” said Marco Carrai, President of Toscana Aeroporti. “Exceeding 1.6 million passengers in the first quarter, with double-digit growth above the national average, marks an important milestone. While seasonal trends influence our net results, we are especially pleased with the acceleration of strategic investments, almost quadrupled compared to last year, focused on expanding Pisa’s terminal and advancing Florence’s Master Plan. These achievements, together with encouraging April traffic and positive summer forecasts, allow us to look forward to the rest of the year with confidence, while staying vigilant about global dynamics.”
