FLORENCE, ITALY – Lifeguards at the resort of Fiumara, close to Marina di Grosseto on Tuscany’s Maremma coast, called bathers out of the water for some consecutive days after spotting sharks.
The animals fin a few dozen meters from the shore. Another shark fin was sighted in front of Feniglia beach.
Port authorities say they could be Blue sharks or Thresher sharks, which don’t usually prey on humans. However seeing them so close to shore is an anomaly, they said.
Blue shark (photo: Mark Conlin/NMFS) or Thresher sharks inhabits deep waters in the world’s temperate and tropical oceans. Preferring cooler waters, they migrate long distances, such as from New England to South America.
It may have success in migrating some sharks has entered the Mediterranean to reach the Tuscan coast.
