A magnitude 3.7 earthquake was recorded off the coast of northern Tuscany on Wednesday, August 12, the second significant tremor to affect the Pisa area in just over a week.
According to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the earthquake occurred at 10:57 a.m. local time in the sea off the Tuscan coast, in an area associated with the provinces of Pisa, Lucca and Massa-Carrara. The hypocentre was estimated at a depth of 9 kilometres, with coordinates 43.6623 north and 10.1947 east.
The tremor was felt in parts of the Pisa and Livorno provinces. Local reports indicated that it was noticed from the coast to inland areas of the province of Pisa.
A smaller magnitude 1.5 earthquake had been recorded in the same general area at 10:18 a.m., about 40 minutes before the magnitude 3.7 event.
Second notable earthquake in eight days
Wednesday’s earthquake comes only eight days after a stronger magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck near Pisa on August 4.
That earthquake occurred at 10:15 a.m., with its epicentre about seven kilometres west of Pisa and at a depth of approximately eight kilometres. It was widely felt across northern Tuscany, including in the provinces of Pisa, Lucca and Massa-Carrara, with reports also coming from the Florence area.
The August 4 earthquake temporarily disrupted rail travel around Pisa, as services were suspended while technical inspections were carried out on railway infrastructure. Trains later resumed gradually, although delays and cancellations continued during the day.
That event had itself followed a smaller magnitude 2.8 earthquake near Pisa during the night between July 30 and 31.
INGV notes that earthquake locations and magnitude measurements are estimates based on the seismic data available and may be revised as further analysis is carried out.
