Florence has begun replacing and expanding its network of public litter bins in the historic centre, with 90 new cast-iron bins due to be installed in the first phase of the project.
The work has started around Piazza della Signoria and Via dei Calzaiuoli, one of the main pedestrian routes through central Florence. It will progressively extend to Piazza della Repubblica, Piazza San Giovanni, beside the Duomo, and other major areas within the UNESCO-listed historic centre, according to waste management company Plures Alia.
Each of the new bins has a capacity of 90 litres and has been designed specifically for the historic centre. Existing bins will gradually be replaced, while additional bins will be installed in locations where demand is particularly high.
The project is intended to increase waste capacity in areas used by large numbers of residents, workers and visitors.
The first 90 bins are part of a broader plan drawn up by Plures Alia for the Municipality of Florence. Further phases will review the distribution of litter bins across the rest of the historic centre and eventually other parts of the city.
Bins removed during the programme will not simply be discarded. Plures Alia said they will be refurbished and relocated to other parts of Florence, increasing the overall number of usable collection points across the city.
The changes come as Florence continues to adjust its waste collection and street-cleaning services to the particularly heavy demand in the historic centre. Plures Alia has previously said that waste services in central Florence have been expanded to operate seven days a week, alongside measures including more frequent cleaning and monitoring of waste containers.
