Siena woke up under a layer of snow on Wednesday morning after unexpected precipitation shortly before dawn. With ice forming on roads and pavements, the city administration ordered the closure of all schools of every level for the entire day.

Municipal workers were deployed early to clear streets and manage the situation. The city urged residents to avoid unnecessary car use and to drive with caution where travel is unavoidable. According to the municipality, no major disruptions have been reported so far on Siena’s road network or in surrounding areas.
In addition to schools, the city also closed day centres for elderly and disabled people as a precautionary measure due to icy conditions.

The cold spell is affecting much of the region. Eugenio Giani, president of the Tuscany region, reported very low minimum temperatures overnight, with –12°C recorded at Passo delle Radici in the northern Apennines, –9.5°C in Pieve Santo Stefano, –6.2°C in Montopoli, and –4.4°C in Florence.
A yellow weather alert for ice is in force across Tuscany until midday. Regional authorities said road maintenance vehicles are operating on the main routes and again urged motorists to drive carefully.
