Rising Interest in Dealcoholised Wines, but Many Questions Remain

Consumer and producer interest in dealcoholised and low-alcohol wines is growing, though several uncertainties remain about how the market will develop. Experts discussed the issue in Florence at the final conference of Dewine, a research project funded by Italy’s Ministry of Universities and Research (Mur) and coordinated by the Georgofili Academy.

Professor Eugenio Pomarici from the University of Padua, who opened the session, said that producers will need to anticipate demand that is likely to expand in the coming years, ensuring that product quality and pricing meet expectations.

The first presentation, by Antonio Seccia of the University of Foggia, outlined a market study showing that transparency and quality indicators are key factors influencing consumer trust, while incomplete product information tends to discourage purchases.

Adele Coppola from the University of Basilicata presented data showing that more than 60% of Italian wineries surveyed—out of a sample of 177—are interested in producing so-called Nolo wines (no- or low-alcohol wines).

Further research presented by Fabio Verneau of the University of Naples Federico II examined consumer acceptance in major international markets, with a specific focus on Italy. Maurizio Prosperi, also from the University of Foggia, assessed the environmental sustainability of dealcoholised wine production through comparative analyses of different technological and logistical models.

The final report, by Elisa Giampietri from the University of Padua, explored the feasibility and challenges of introducing partial dealcoholisation in wines with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) labels in Italy.
