Almost one in two visitors to Florence arrives by train, according to a new national survey by research institute Swg for Trainline, in collaboration with the City of Florence and the Destination Florence Foundation.
The report highlights how rail travel has become the preferred option for cultural tourism in Italy, chosen by 87% of respondents when visiting art cities such as Florence, Rome and Venice. In Florence, 49% of visitors use the train to reach the city, with 57% citing the desire to avoid traffic and the difficulty of finding parking as their main reasons.
Two out of three Italians said they had visited Florence in the past five years. Among younger travellers, rail use was even higher. Overall satisfaction with visits to the city reached 84%, with the cultural offer receiving 87% approval.
High-speed connections were also seen as a major factor in improving travel opportunities, making Florence more attractive for students and professionals, and strengthening ties with other Italian cities.
