The Teatro Nazionale, a historic theatre steps from Piazza della Signoria, has reopened after a major four-year restoration that rescued the building from severe structural decay. The venue, which covers more than 2,000 square metres, will be used for private functions until the end of January before opening to the public once the required safety and entertainment licences are issued, according to the project team.
Built in the 1600s, the Teatro Nazionale has had multiple identities over the centuries. It began as a reformatory, later became the Ospedale della Vecchia Quarconia and then a succession of theatres, including the Teatro del Giglio, where the comic character Stenterello was created. In the mid-19th century, during Florence’s period as the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, it assumed the name Teatro Nazionale. In the 20th century it was converted into a cinema, which closed in the 1980s. After a period of abandonment and informal use by local collectives, the building was acquired and restored by private owners.
The renovation cost €15 million and included extensive structural consolidation, new roofing and floors, full climate control, and the recovery of original decorative elements found in the building. The theatre now features LED lighting, an automated screen and a modern acoustic system designed to support musical performances, which are expected to become its main focus. A rehearsal room, a fully equipped kitchen for up to 150 covers and a bar area intended for jazz evenings complete the refurbishment.
City officials welcomed the reopening, noting that the project restores an important cultural site in the historic centre. During a preview event, guests heard a piano performance that highlighted the new acoustic system. The theatre is expected to operate for most of the year under a cultural management plan that includes concerts, special events and rentals for institutions and private clients.
