Giacomo Balla’s Vision of the Sea on Display in Pistoia

Giacomo Balla’s Vision of the Sea on Display in Pistoia

A rare group of works by Giacomo Balla, one of Italy’s most iconic Futurist artists, will be on view this fall at Palazzo de’ Rossi in Pistoia. From September 27, 2025, to February 22, 2026, In Visita | Giacomo Balla will showcase three works that explore the artist’s dynamic and decorative interpretations of the sea.

The highlight of the exhibition is Velmare (1919), on loan from the Credem Collection in Reggio Emilia, presented for the first time alongside two rare versions of Ballucecolormare—one from the Fondazione Caript collection, the other from a private lender. All three works were painted between Viareggio and Rome during a pivotal period when Balla was reimagining Futurism with new “lines of force” and vibrant, wave-like forms.

The exhibition is part of the In Visita series organized by Fondazione Pistoia Musei, which hosts temporary displays of 20th- and 21st-century masters in dialogue with its permanent collections. Curated by Monica Preti and Annamaria Iacuzzi, with contributions from Balla expert Elena Gigli, this fourth edition also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, where Balla’s sea-themed works were warmly received.

Visitors to the museum can expect guided tours, public talks, and workshops for all ages throughout the exhibition. A dedicated catalogue will be published by Gli Ori-Pistoia.

Palazzo de’ Rossi, home to the Collezioni del Novecento, offers a permanent look at the region’s modern art history, featuring artists like Marino Marini, Mario Nigro, and Adolfo Natalini. Part of the exhibition space is reserved for rotating shows like In Visita and Insider, which explore rarely seen works and archival material.

Tickets for In Visita | Giacomo Balla are €6 full price and €4 reduced. Admission to the Collezioni del Novecento is included. A combined museum pass is also available.
