Florence once again paid tribute to its resilient past with the annual Partita dell’Assedio, which took place on Monday, February 17, in Piazza Santa Croce. The match commemorates the historic game played by Florentines on February 17, 1530, during the siege imposed by Emperor Charles V’s troops. At the time, the game was a bold act of defiance, demonstrating the city’s unyielding spirit even under military threat.
“This tradition has grown significantly over the years, and I am very pleased to continue it,” said Letizia Perini, Florence’s Councilor for Popular Traditions. “The city has taken on the organization of this event to ensure its future, given its importance.” Perini also highlighted the charitable aspect of the event: “I am delighted that the Associazione Vecchie Glorie has chosen to donate all proceeds to AIL, the Italian Association for Leukemia. It’s wonderful to enjoy this historic event while also supporting those in need.”
Michele Pierguidi, president of Calcio Storico Fiorentino, emphasized the significance of the game: “This is Florence’s celebration and a match of Florentine pride. It was originally played under siege as a provocation to the imperial troops. Today, it remains a key moment in our city’s historical traditions.”
Before the match, a delegation of players, flag bearers, and musicians from the Historical Football Parade, all dressed in Renaissance attire, gathered inside the Basilica of Santa Croce to receive a blessing from the rector. Following this solemn moment, the group returned to the square for a spectacular performance by the city’s flag-throwers, setting the stage for the highly anticipated match, which kicked off at 3:30 PM.
Organized by the Municipality of Florence in collaboration with Associazione 50 Minuti, the event was open to the public. Attendees were invited to make donations in support of AIL, adding a charitable dimension to this vibrant celebration of Florence’s indomitable spirit.
