Florence Named Top Digital City in Italy 2024

Florence has been recognized as one of Italy’s eight “full digital” cities in the ICity Rank 2024, a report by Fpa presented during the Forum PA Città. This accolade highlights the city’s commitment to integrating digital technologies across urban infrastructure and services, placing it at the forefront of Italy’s digital transformation.

Smart City Achievements

Florence excelled across three dimensions of the ICity Rank evaluation:

1. Digital Administration – Enhanced online services and platform integration.

2. Open Cities – Advanced use of open data and user-friendly apps.

3. Connected Cities – Strong infrastructure for IoT, public Wi-Fi, and data-driven services.

These efforts have resulted in Florence surpassing the 75/100 benchmark across all dimensions, underscoring its position as a national leader in digital innovation.

Local Vision: People-Centered Innovation

“We are proud of this achievement, which once again places Florence at the forefront of digital transformation in Italy,” said Assessora Sparavigna. She emphasized the city’s focus on leveraging technology to serve its residents, outlining key initiatives:

Digital Twin Technology: Advanced tools for scenario creation, analysis, and monitoring to deliver public responses tailored to citizens’ needs.

Smart City Control Room: A centralized system for managing emergencies with speed and efficiency, underpinned by robust data governance.

Digital Education Campaigns: Programs aimed at equipping all age groups with the skills to navigate and benefit from digital tools.

“We aim to build a simpler city, ready to face future challenges, by combining innovation with inclusivity,” Sparavigna added.

Key Numbers Reflecting Digital Growth

Florence’s strides in digitalization are evident in its 2023 metrics:

2.2 million external accesses to the municipal network (+22% vs. 2022).

95 services integrated with PagoPA, processing 1.2 million transactions (+22%).

168 active digital services, with 482,000 accesses via SPID (+28%).

2,950 public Wi-Fi hotspots, facilitating 28,000 daily connections and over 9 million total accesses in 2022.

12 digital services available through the App IO, with plans to expand to 22 by leveraging PNRR projects.

1,999 open datasets released, up from 1,933 in 2022.
