Italy won the Eurovision Contest 2021

FLORENCE, ITALY – Italy won the Eurovision contest 2021 with the rockbound Maneskin and the song Zitti e buoni (Good and quiet). Last Italian victory to the most important song contest in the world was in 1990 when Toto Cutugno sang Insieme (Together). The only other Italian victory were in 1964 with Gigliola Cinquetti and the song Non ho l’età (I don’t have the age).

Måneskin (Danish for ‘moonlight’) is an Italian rock band from Rome, consisting of lead vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi, and drummer Ethan Torchio. The band rose to fame after ending up second in the eleventh season of the Italian talent show X Factor in 2017. The band won the Sanremo Music Festival 2021.

The Eurovision Song Contest, sometimes abbreviated to ESC, is organised annually by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) which features participants representing primarily European countries. Each participating country submits an original song to be performed on live television and radio, transmitted to national broadcasters via the EBU’s Eurovision and Euroradio networks, with competing countries then casting votes for the other countries’ songs to determine a winner.

Traditionally held in the country which won the preceding year’s event, the contest provides an opportunity to promote the host country and city as a tourist destination. Fifty-two countries have participated at least once.
