FLORENCE, ITALY – Florence’s Fountain of Neptune in Piazza della Signoria lit up in the black, yellow and red of the Belgian flag from 18:30 on Tuesday March 22, 2016.
A procession then led from Piazza della Signoria to the Belgian consulate.
“Today’s is another attack on the heart of Europe,” said Florence Mayor Dario Nardella. “From Florence we are close to Belgium and we are ready to work with other European cities to prevent terrorism from taking root,” he said.
The attacks occurred on Tuesday morning at Maelbeek metro station near European Union headquarters and Brussels’ Zaventem airport. The Islamic State (ISIS) terror group has claimed responsibility for them, according to the ISIS-linked Amaq news agency.
Even Rome’s Trevi Fountain and Capitoline Hill were lit up in the colours of the Belgian flag on Tuesday evening as a tribute to the victims of terror attacks in Brussels which left at least 34 people dead.
