FLORENCE, ITALY – A 65-year-old woman died of meningitis C in the Pistoia area on Sunday night. Also on Sunday, a 22-year-old man was hospitalized with meningitis at Ponte a Niccheri hospital near Florence.
The woman had been hospitalized Saturday night, and is the second meningitis fatality in Tuscany this year after a 58-year-old man died in hospital in the city of Pisa on January 21. This brings to seven the total cases of meningitis in Tuscany this year, against 38 cases and seven deaths in 2015.
On January 27, public health authorities extended a free vaccination campaign for people aged 20-45 to the entire region. That campaign was started last year and was extended to June this year.
