FLORENCE, ITALY – UNESCO announced that three Italian sites were among 20 that had been added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. It describes biosphere reserves as “places for learning about sustainable development aiming to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with the sustainable use of natural resources”.
The three Italian sites are the Po Delta reserve, the Ledro Alps and Judicaria reserve and the Apennines in the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano reserve.
The Appennino Tosco-Emiliano site stands between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna regions, and contains 70% of all the animal species present in Italy, including species of birds, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, fish, the wolf and the Golden Eagle.
The Po Delta site covers an area of 139,398 hectares and is spread over 16 municipalities. It includes the confluence of river branches, coastal dune systems and sand formations, lagoons, fishing ponds, marshes, fossil dunes, canals and coastal pine forests and cultivated lands dominated by rice farming, providing great variety of biodiversity and habitats.
The Ledro Alps and Judicaria reserve is in the northern Trentino region, between the Dolomite World Heritage site and Lake Garda.
