Italian university students union UDU organised symbolic gatherings at several major Italian universities yesterday, in protest at what they describe as “the government’s total lack of interest in state universities.” Among others, meetings were held across the country, at Padua, Parma, Florence, L’Aquila and Palermo universities.

The meeting of EPP: watch Mario Monti’s address
Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti will visit the EUI this Thursday 6 September, to open the meeting of the Presidency of the European People’s Party in Florence. Monti’s opening address will be streamed live and accessible to all. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 13.00. Watch the event here. The State of the Union 2012 to take place in May
The 2012 edition of The State of the Union, organised by the European University Institute, is hosted in the Florence City Hall. The Conference takes place on 9-10 May. It aims at contributing to the analysis and debate of the European Union’s current situation, EU policies and the functioning of EU institutions and it brings together high-level policy-makers, leading academics and opinion leaders.
Demonstrations for Work-Free Sunday
Florence is a tourist town, but most retailers do not agree on Sunday openings. Trade unions protested yesterday: they have demonstrated in major cities across the Country, also in Florence. Even the Catholic Church voiced its support on Sunday as part of a Europe-wide campaign against allowing more businesses to stay open on Sundays.
