Florence’s Bardini Garden wisteria in bloom for a brief spring display

The wisteria pergola at Giardino Bardini has started to bloom, marking one of Florence’s most recognisable seasonal events. The flowering typically lasts for about ten days, offering a short window to see the tunnel at its peak.

The pergola, which stretches for around 70 metres, is covered in clusters of wisteria flowers in shades ranging from pale lilac to deep violet, with tones of mauve and pink. The structure was completed in 2005 as part of the restoration of the historic complex supported by Fondazione CR Firenze.

Several varieties of wisteria are cultivated along the pergola, including Wisteria floribunda ‘Black Dragon’, known for its dark double flowers, as well as ‘Royal Purple’, ‘Showa Beni’, and Wisteria sinensis ‘Prolific’. Together, they create a dense floral canopy that has become a recurring subject of photographs shared widely on social media.

A short but increasingly popular seasonal event

In recent years, the wisteria bloom has attracted growing numbers of visitors, both from Italy and abroad. Its brief duration makes timing essential, and the garden provides a live webcam on its official website to monitor the flowering in real time.

Villa Bardini is open to the public under the management of Fondazione Parchi Monumentali Bardini e Peyron, supported by Fondazione CR Firenze.

More than the pergola

Beyond the wisteria, the Bardini Garden reflects several centuries of Florentine history. The site combines different landscape styles, including an Italian-style garden with a baroque staircase, an English-style woodland area, and an agricultural section with orchards.

A panoramic terrace at the top of the garden offers views over Florence’s historic centre, including its rooftops and major landmarks.

Practical information

The wisteria bloom is already underway and is expected to remain at its best for a limited period of around ten days.

Opening hours, ticket information and updates on exhibitions and events are available on the garden’s official website.
